From the seaside to the history of the Teranga country
1 day to the discovery of Dakar and the Goree Island
The Gorée Slaves House is also a place of tour-history that is opened for a visit every day except on Monday. It was built in 1776 by the Dutch and served as the last slaves’ house of the country. The first slaves’ buildings built by the Portuguese, date back to 1536. Today, it has a symbolic significance as an emblem of the slave trade. On the ground floor are the slaves ‘cells, which are categorized as follows: men and children’s rooms, girls’ rooms, there are also weighing rooms and so on. The men’s rooms measure each 2.60 m by 2.60 m, and about 15 to 20 slaves were kept there with each sitting with their backs against the wall with chains on their necks and arms.
